Security Fence
To provide greater safety and security for the children, a new fence is going to be constructed around the perimetre of the school. Once established, the fence will eliminate the flow of public thoroughfare through the school grounds and the school will be able to be secured during school hours and more closely monitored by the watchman after hours.
Text Books
New curriculum based text books have been purchased for each grade and for each subject. These resources will provide a better foundation for learning and for children to gain the marks to advance to the next level.
Fuel Efficient Jiko Cookers
With the expansion of the feeding program at the school - 2 meals per day: morning porridge and lunch rice & beans, the purchase of the new fuel efficient 200 litre 'Jiko' cookers has been a welcome addition to the kitchen. Jiko is the Swahili word for cooker and solves two problems simulataneouly by addressing the issue of high cost of raw material for making the cooking equipment as well as reducing the amount of biomass required to cook by using available energy more efficiently. A third cooker is due to be installed in the near future.
Desks and Chairs
Due to the increased number of children at the school, there has been a need to build 60 additional shared school desks (4 children per desk) for the children. To help the local Kibera community, these purchases have all been contracted to local Kibera based carpenters, ensuring that the local community benefits. 10 teacher tables and chairs are also being built for each of the classrooms.
Security Doors
With the recent addition of purchases (text books, cooking facilities, desks and chairs) we have installed 3 metal security doors to the principal's office, kitchen and food storage area.
